Adjusting pH is guesswork until you know how much product to add — too little does nothing, too much sends you chasing the number back the other way. The calculator above estimates the acid or soda ash dose from your volume and readings so you land it in fewer steps.
What it calculates
Enter your pool volume, current pH, and target pH, and the tool tells you roughly how much acid (to lower pH) or pH increaser like soda ash (to raise it) to add. The aim is the 7.2–7.8 range, ideally 7.4–7.6. Because the dose scales with volume, an accurate gallon figure is essential — feed the calculator your real volume, not a round guess.
Mind alkalinity too
pH and total alkalinity move together, so glance at TA before dosing. Acid lowers both pH and alkalinity; soda ash raises both; and if alkalinity is way off, pH won't hold no matter how precisely you dose. If you're constantly re-adjusting pH, the underlying fix is usually getting alkalinity into its 80–120 ppm range first — then pH becomes stable and the calculator's doses actually stick.
Add slowly and retest
Use the estimate as a guide, then verify. Add the calculated amount with the pump running, let it circulate, and retest before adding more — overshooting pH means correcting it back with the opposite chemical, wasting product and time. When lowering pH with acid, follow all safety precautions: gloves, goggles, ventilation, and never mixing chemicals. Small doses and a retest beat one big pour every time.
